Whitworth's 3-pounder, 1.7 inch caliber gun, weighed 208 pounds. With a charge of 8 ounces of powder at an elevation of 35 degrees, it projects its shot with remarkable accuracy, to a distance of more than 5 1/2 miles. According to The Confederate Ordnance Manual, 1863 Edition, the form of the Whitworth projectile was described as a hexagonal prismoid.
