Dined in a Hollow Cottonwood Tree
In 1749, just
before the start of the French and Indian War, the French decided to try
to solidify their claim to the Ohio Country. They sent an expedition
led by Capt. Pierre-Joseph Celeron de Blainville, down the Ohio, burying
lead plates along the riverbank, claiming the land for France. Along
the banks, they found huge sycamore, or cottonwood trees; whose hollow
trunks were big enough to sleep 29 men.
