When the jet age emerged in Korea, the Soviets badly needed an example of the US F-86 Sabre.  It was superior to the Mig-15, and we had designed it while the Russians copied the Mig from a World War II Messerschmit project.
In October of 1951, Bill Garrtt's F-86A was shot down by a Russian flown Mig-15.  We sent in air strikes to destroy the downed plane, while the Russians tried to fight them off.  We failed, but managed to rescue the pilot.  The next day, the Soviets extracted the Sabre by Coolie Power, and moved it to the worker's paradise.  Some of the good stuff is later incorporated into Soviet fighter design.
