Eads Bridge The Eads Bridge under construction, 1873 At its completion in 1874, the Eads Bridge, crossing the Mississippi River at St Louis, was the largest bridge ever constructed, and the first to use alloy steel. It enabled the railroads to link Chicago with the West, and ensured St Louis as a center of trade.
