Michael Wittmann is the most famous and successful tank commander of WWII.  As a commander, he was responsible for the destruction of no less than 141 enemy tanks and 132 anti-tank guns.  At the time of his death during the Normandy campaign, he was a national hero in Germany and was a holder of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.
