You take off at suppertime in a plane the size of a DC-3, with no bottom turret - which makes you easy meat for the night fighters.  And, in a loose formation where you can't count on support from your fellow bombers.  You are essentially alone.
You come back early morning for a cup of coffee and some sleep - or you end up dead or in a POW camp.
