News
of Colonel Crawford
In 1782, Col. William
Crawford led a campaign against the British allied Indian village of
Sandusky, in the Ohio country. The western counties of Pennsylvania
and Virginia have long suffered many depredations from the Indian tribes
living across the Ohio. Now, Col. Crawford, a close friend of George
Washington, with 18 Companies of Militia from Fayette and Washington
Counties (PA) were ready to take the Wyandot settlement on the
river. However, the small army was ambushed by the Indians (a
combined force of Wyandot and Delaware, with a British Officer -
accompanied by Butler's Rangers from British held Detroit - and the
noted renegade Simon Girty to help organize things), with many killed and
captured. The Colonel was tortured to death, burned at the stake,
which took hours. Frank captures the emotion of friends and
neighbors as they receive the tragic News of Colonel Crawford. |
