The Sopwith Camel is widely recognized as the
most successful allied fighters of the Great War. Of the men who flew them
exclusively one name stands out above the rest - Major Donald R MacLaren.
A Canadian by birth, MacLaren joined the RFC in 1917. After serving
briefly in Canada, he was finally posted to France where he was assigned
to 46 Squadron. His number of victories quickly began to accumulate, and
by the end of the war he had brought his total to 54. Although he flew 5
different Camels during his war time career, he scored his final nine
victories in this machine, F2137.
