After months of gathering, branding and herding Texas Longhorn cattle to markets at the end of trails that traversed hostile, arduous country, the drovers most likely spent days in "cattle towns: drinking, carousing and celebrating the successful end of a drive".  Then, after selling off the undesirable horses, keeping only the best and perhaps the lead steer, they headed off on the long journey home.
