| Sir Francis Drake
circumnavigates the globe. Departing England in late 1577 aboard his
ship, the Pelican, later named The Golden Hind. Drake returns in the
fall of 1580, nearly three years and some 36,000 miles later. His voyage was hardly explorational in nature. He was a government sanctioned pirate, and stole all the Spanish gold he could lay hands on. Sir Francis and the Queen profited handsomely. |
