| Military Aviation Art July, 1941. A pair of F2A-2 Brewster Buffaloes of VF-3’s “Felix the Cat” Squadron keeps watch overhead while operating off of Diamondhead. Steaming below, the USS Arizona (BB 39) and USS Saratoga (CV-3) are accompanied by a pair of four-stacker destroyers of the Wickes Class. The Brewster Buffalo was arguably the worst airplane ever in American Military Service, hated by all who flew it, and despised by every ground crew who tried to keep it in the air. It didn't take the Navy long to get tired of them when, they did what they always did when they wouldn't use some equipment: they gave the Buffaloes to the Marines. Many were exported to the Finns, who used them to good effect against the Russians. The Brits also bought many of the Buffaloes. Most were sent to Singapore, where they lasted about 30 minutes against the Japanese. A truly remarkable airplane: http://www.warbirdforum.com/buff.htm http://www.warbirdalley.com/buffalo.htm Only one still exists in the world: http://www.brewsterbuffalos.com/index2.php |
