While much of the plunder taken from a ship
was consumed by the crew or sold at a friendly port; hard currency, jewels and the like
were divided among the crew. The captain took the largest share. Piracy is an uncertain profession, and a man couldn't trust his associates not to borrow from his funds while he wasn't looking (see, things haven't changed that much). So, you can't hide a treasure chest on a ship, and a desolate beach asks
a lot fewer question than a bank.
